MMA's Fil-Am Mark Munoz

Munoz Gains From Entire Experience, Sharpens MMA Skills as UFC Career Continues

March 16, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio--(U.S. ASIAN WIRE)-- In his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut on March 7, "Filipino Wrecking Machine" Mark Munoz, encountered his first loss as he faced veteran Matt Hamill in Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, before 17,033 mixed martial arts (MMA) enthusiasts.

As the fighters entered the Octagon, Hamill thwarted a single-leg attack from Munoz. During the battle Munoz took a few hits from Hamill, an inside leg kick and a couple of right crosses. Munoz was able to land two left hooks and throw several right hooks, but in the end Hamill delivered a right roundhouse kick to Munoz' temple when his guard was down, knocking him out in 3 minutes and 53 seconds in the first round. Though Munoz was down for a couple of minutes, he was revived and walked out of the Octagon on his own. Although upset with the loss, Munoz acknowledges Hamill's fight and congratulated him on the win.

If Munoz' resiliency and determination shown as a college wrestler can foretell the future, it is guaranteed that his MMA skills will sharpen as his career continues in the UFC. In an interview a week after his fight Munoz said, "I'm definitely going to be a better fighter. I am going to be 110 percent better."

With 5 wins and 1 loss, Munoz is committed to learning from this experience, to returning to the Octagon with renewed vigor, and to earning his sixth win.
