When Takaki’s A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America was first published in 1993, it was hailed by reviewers and academics as a groundbreaking work. Publishers Weekly dubbed it “a brilliant revisionist history of America that is likely to become a classic of multicultural studies.” On Dec. 8, 2008, an updated and revised edition of A Different Mirror was released, giving readers new insight into the deep and rich multicultural makeup of America—past and present. In this expanded work, Takaki digs deeper into American history and explains how and why our nation became a society of so many different races and cultures.
The grandson of Japanese immigrant plantation laborers in Hawaii, Takaki has been a professor of Ethnic Studies for 36 years at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught more than 20,000 students. He is the author of several widely-acclaimed books, including Iron Cages: Race and Culture in 19th Century America and Strangers from a Different Shore: A History of Asian Americans.
