Voting Begins in 6th Annual Asian Heritage Awards

Asia Media Inc. and Community Honor Outstanding Asian Americans

June 01, 2009

SAN DIEGO - (U.S. ASIAN WIRE) - More than 14,000 votes have been cast in the first week of balloting for the Sixth Annual Asian Heritage Awards, far exceeding expectations, according to Rosalynn Carmen, CEO and President of Asia Media Inc., co-producer of the annual event honoring achievement in the Asian Pacific Islander community.

ÒWe feel so privileged that so many people understand what we are doing and are willing to participate, especially at a time when all we hear is doom and gloom,Ó said Carmen.

ÒAt this moment, more than ever, we need to send a message of hope, achievement and prosperity, which is what the Asian Heritage Awards is all about.Ó

One-hundred and five nominees have been nominated in 14 categories: government, business enterprise, community service media & film, legal, education, health/medicine, entrepreneurship, science & technology, humanitarian outreach, performing arts, visual arts/literature, cultural preservation and, for the first time, military.

Candidates range from famous chefs to distinguished mayors and include community activists, individuals who have grown home businesses into multi-million-dollar enterprises, performers of ancient and modern music, health experts, educators and other areas of accomplishments.

ÒThe common denominator is that they all have been nominated by the community. To be selected is a privilege because it shows that their work is being recognized and shared with others,Ó said Carmen, co-publisher Asia Media Inc.Õs newspaper ASIA, The Journal of Culture & Commerce.

The event this year is being held aboard the USS Midway in downtown San Diego for two reasons: The carrierÕs connection to the Asian community, having rescued thousands of Vietnamese fleeing the fall of Saigon in 1975, and because the formal gala will also pay a special tribute to our Armed Forces.

In addition to a top honoree in each category, to be announced at the event, the Awards will also accord Special Recognition to retired Major General Antonio Taguba, the first person, in 2004, to focus the international spotlight on prisoner abuses in Iraq. Since then, the topic has been part of a much heated public debate on interrogation methods used by the former Bush Administration.

Voting in the 14 categories began midnight May 22 and will continue until midnight June 26.
