(U.S. ASIAN WIRE)- When: Saturday May 16, 2009 11:00 am-2:00 pm

Where: San Francisco, California (Civic Center)

Who: Mark Munoz, Filipino-American UFC Fighter

What: On May 16, Munoz will appear on-stage at the Asian Street Heritage Celebration in San Francisco to share how community programs were very much a part of his childhood development. Programs such as the Vallejo Police Activities League kept Munoz out of trouble, kept him focused on school, and nurtured his self-esteem as a young male growing up in an urban environment. As a direct result of Munoz's participation in the community youth wrestling program, the dedication of great wrestling coaches, and the support of his immediate community, Munoz was able to secure a full ride scholarship for 4 years to Oklahoma State University, a well known NCAA division one wrestling dynasty.

In college, Munoz made the NWCA All-Academic Team for three years in a row and the Big 12 All-Academic squad for four. He was a member of the FILA Junior World Wrestling Team from 1996-1998, in 1998, Munoz earned a silver medal at the FILA Junior World Wrestling Championships. In 2001, Munoz won the NCAA Division title in his weight class. Munoz acknowledges that without the community youth wrestling program, he may not have had such opportunities.
